WRESTLING DUO GEAR FOR SENEGAL SHOWDOWN
Sun Sports recently caught up with Moagi Sharp, President of the Botswana Wrestling Federation (BWF), to discuss the exciting news of two Botswana wrestlers gearing up for the Senior Beach Wrestling Competition in Senegal this July.
Sun Sports: How were Jeffais Kulube and Kelebogile Basupi selected to represent Botswana in the Senior African Beach Wrestling competition?
Moagi Sharp: They were selected on January 16, 2024, during our inaugural Beach Wrestling Match in Gaborone. This match marked a significant milestone for us.
Sun Sports:
What criteria were considered during the selection process?
Moagi Sharp: Criteria such as weight division and performance were paramount. Jeffais Kulube’s outstanding performance, winning all his bouts in the 80 kg division, earned him a spot in the Beach Wrestling National Team. Kelebogile Basupi, excelling in the 70 kg division, showcased her prowess among female wrestlers.
Sun Sports:
Were there any qualifying tournaments or trials held for the selection of these athletes? Moagi Sharp: No, they were selected during our pro wrestling tryouts in 2022 and had been competing in various wrestling events since then. Their transition to Beach Wrestling this year aligns with our federation’s expansion.
Sun Sports: What are the expectations for Jeffais Kulube and Kelebogile Basupi once they reach Senegal? Moagi Sharp:
Despite being new to this style of wrestling, they are primed to compete at their best. A podium finish would be a significant achievement. We aim to arrive on June 20th and depart on the same day, facilitating practice matches with other countries beforehand.
Sun Sports: Are there specific performance goals set for them to achieve during the competition? Moagi Sharp:
Given their novice status in Beach wrestling, we haven’t set specific goals. Participation itself is invaluable for their development.
Sun Sports: How do you anticipate their participation will contribute to the promotion and development of wrestling in Botswana? Moagi Sharp:
Their participation will elevate our ranking within the BNSC, potentially leading to increased funding. Moreover, it will dispel misconceptions about wrestling’s safety and pave the way for international collaborations and opportunities for Botswana.
Sun Sports:
How are Jeffais Kulube and Kelebogile Basupi preparing for the competition?
Moagi Sharp: We’re organizing local beach wrestling matches and training camps, complemented by weekly training sessions and specialized coaching on weekends.
Sun Sports: Can you provide insight into their training regimen and any specialized training they are undergoing for beach wrestling? Moagi Sharp:
Their training regimen includes jogging, technique drills, and sparring sessions. Kelebogile is even training with male wrestlers to enhance her strength.
Sun Sports: Are there any specific challenges they are facing during their preparation, and if so, how are they being addressed? Moagi Sharp:
Time constraints due to their jobs pose a challenge. We’re working around their schedules to ensure consistent training.
Sun Sports: Are you seeking additional assistance from the Botswana National Sports Commission to support the participation of Jeffais Kulube and Kelebogile Basupi in the Senior African Beach Wrestling competition? Moagi Sharp: Yes, we are seeking additional assistance as our current grant has been utilized. Additional support would allow us to expand
our team and enhance our competitive edge.
Sun Sports:
In what ways do you believe the Botswana National Sports Commission can further support
the development of wrestling in Botswana?
Moagi Sharp: Increased funding for equipment, integration into existing programs, and opportunities to compete at continental and international levels are essential for the growth of wrestling in Botswana, including the initiation of wrestling programs in schools, particularly Beach Wrestling.
