MATEBELE WARDING OFF RELEGATION

- BY NALEDI LEMOGANG

After sending a scare in the Botswana Premier League with an early good start, Matebele FC has since fallen down the rankings as they now find themselves in ninth place, only five points clear of the relegation zone. With only nine games left in the season, the pressure is mounting for the team to pick up their form and stave off the threat of relegation. The teams head coach, Nicholas Woody Jacobs said that they need to work hard to overcome this challenge and avoid being cut down by

the relegation scissors.

In a crucial match on Sunday, Matebele FC drew 1-1 with Township Rollers. This followed a disappointing 2-1 loss to Eleven Angels in the previous game. Matebele FC currently sits with 6 wins, 7 draws, 8 losses, and 25 points.

Despite being newcomers to the elite league, Matebele FC started out with a bang, setting a high pace for themselves. When the team’s Namibian coach left for national team duty during the first round of the season, the team’s performance dropped, and he is still trying to balance things out since his return in January. He is now focused on steering the team away from relegation, with every point crucial in the race to avoid the drop.

Speaking after the final whistle of their game against Township Rollers on Sunday, Jacobs, expressed concern about his team’s position in the league and the threat of slipping into the relegation zone. He said that they would do everything they could to avoid relegation, acknowledging that the other teams were also working hard to improve their standings. He noted that the league was coming to an end, and that they would need to “step up their game” if they wanted to remain in the top flight.
