Kazungula Bridge To Be Officially Opened
Government through the Ministry of Transport and Communications will officially open the Kazungula Bridge today. Despite the opening, the public will start using the iconic infrastructure from tomorrow between 0600hrs and 1800hrs every day of the week. The U$260 million or P2.6b project involved the construction of a 930 meter road and rail over the Zambezi River and in the process opening up a regional economic corridor stretching from Cape Town / Durban through Zambia to the rest of Africa. The project was co- funded by the Botswana and Zambian governments as well as financiers who include African Development Bank, the EU- Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The bridge is anticipated to assist in the facilitation of seamless movement of persons and goods through the Kazungula bridge border, improve regional connectivity of the North- South Corridor as well as contribute to economic regional integration within the SADC region.
