Different speakers at the Botswana Democratic Party’s (BDP) Molepolole South branch congress held over the weekend spoke on the importance of building party unity in the area. The branch congress was held on Saturday at Kgari Sechele Senior Secondary School.

There have been internal fights in the constituency with councillors at the forefront. Some squabbles at some point implicated Kabo Morwaeng, who is the area Member of Parliament (MP) . Elections officer, Kaisara Sejoe said in an interview that although the congress started late, it went smoothly and one could see that the members were even happy to meet.

“As the ruling party, we need to emphasise unity and cooperation spirit within our party so that the members keep on advocating and practising such. It is easy for opposition parties to snatch our constituencies if we are divided,” he said.

“I am happy about the number of members who turned up for the congress because we had expected 97 to vote as the party constitution requires but only 89 people were present.”

Sejoe explained that the mandate for the branch committee had long expired, but they could not hold congresses as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. He was pleased by the way the members handled themselves throughout the congress. Sejoe said the members did not show any element of divisions, rather they had an agreement that there is a need to work together as members for the party prosperity. He added that what was impressive was that the congress even agreed to immediately vote for delegates who will vote at the BDP party congress in July, which they managed to do.

Molepolole South branch chairperson, Thomas Letsholo also encouraged the party members to be united more than ever and also to recruit new members. “This is the time to put aside our differences and work hard as BDP members.

I encourage the members to be united and vote for people who will be able to work with President Mokgweetsi Masisi and support him at all times,” said Letsholo, who managed to retain his seat. “I believe that there will be peace also as delegates for the main party congress are voted at wards and region. As the newly elected branch committee members we will work together with MP Morwaeng, councillors and other party members.

Our responsibility is to unite the party members,” he added.
