Asuspected drunk driver is in police custody after causing a major accident early Saturday morning. The accident, which involved three cars, a Toyota Dyna truck, VW Polo and a Toyota Hiace public transport combi, happened around 8.30am by the Glen Valley BDF camp turn.

Confirming investigation into the accident, Broadhurst Police Station commander, superintendent Obusitswe Lokae said the suspected drunk driver failed to cooperate with the police to a point of refusing to give them his details.

“We are yet to establish his age, name because he was not cooperating with the police but he is likely to be around 40 years (old). We suspect that he was too drunk because he even failed to take a breathalyser test. He lost control of the truck and hit a VW Polo vehicle that ended up hitting a Toyota Hiace combi that was on the oncoming lane,” he said. Lokae said the VW Polo vehicle driver was in the company of her husband who sustained a fractured right thigh and is currently hospitalised at Sidilega Private Hospital.

Furthermore, the eight combi passengers escaped the accident with minor injuries while the Dyna truck driver escaped uninjured. Lokae said drunken driving remains a concern as some drivers continue to drive while under the influence of alcohol, especially during month-end weekends. “Accidents that involve alcohol remain a concern, especially amongst the youth who also have the habit of driving at excessive speed.

However, speeding is dangerous because should a mistake happen, innocent lives would be lost. A majority of drivers also have a tendency of overtaking where there is traffic congestion and end up causing accidents when those with the right-of-way approach,” Lokae said.
