LGBTI condemns false claims, cyberbullying

Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana (LEGABIBO) strongly condemns a video circulating on social media where a man (name known to this publication) seemed to suggest that condoms are not used in the LGBTI community.

“Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana warn the public about a video circulating on multiple social media platforms driving false and potentially harmful information about LGBTI sexual acts.

This information about the LGBTI community is not only misleading but may cause unnecessary harm and panic to the LGBTI community as well as the public at large. With that in mind, we urge the public to only rely on credible sources of information like ourselves on any issues of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression,” a statement from LEGABIBO reads.

The statement further says: “We wish to inform all our stakeholders and the public that LEGABIBO does not condone and strongly condemns any form of cyberbullying and urge the LGBTI community to always stand up for themselves and claim their humanity.

The public is reminded that HIV/AIDS remains a great concern in Botswana. We, therefore, encourage everyone to always practice safe sex. LEGABIBO remains dedicated to supporting the national response to HIV, and above all, ensuring that the safety and wellbeing of our community and staff remain our first priority.”

LEGABIBO in the statement explains that they provide free sexual health commodities like condoms, lubricants, dental dams and finger cots. They also offer free HIV counselling and testing as well as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Anti-Retroviral Therapy.

“We urge all citizenry of Botswana to help us to stop the spread of false information about LGBTI communities.” In the video in question, the young man was being asked a question and he responded that he was making a lot of money at a certain club where he is paid for sexual services and vulgar comments.
