- Lesedi Mkhutshwa Correspondent

FRANCISTOWN: Police in Letlhakane have arrested 22-year-old Austin Letsholo of Tawana ward in connection with eight rape incidents and a robbery. He was nabbed on February 28.

Since the festive season, Letlhakane villagers were fearful as there was a serial rapist on the loose targeting women, particularly in their sleep.

From December 2021 to February this year, the police in the area recorded 15 rape cases. In most of the cases, the victims were attacked while sleeping and the suspected serial rapist used brutal force on the victims. The description provided by the latest victims matched the illustration offered in seven previous rape cases.

Letlhakane police station commander, Superintendent Michael Maphephu said they received information on the alleged serial rapist matching the provided suspect’s description from concerned members of the community.

According to Maphephu, the suspect was recognised by some of the community members while he was in court appearing for an indecent assault matter.

He added that the suspect fitted the description of a long wanted serial rapist who has been on the loose since December 2021. He stated that after he was arrested, about eight rape victims identified him as the man who sexually assaulted them.

Maphephu urged people who were also victims of rape and did not report, to come forward so that the culprit can face the full wrath of the law.

He also advised women to always ensure they are safe at all times and avoid walking alone at night as it can be dangerous.

The 22-yearold man was arraigned before the Letlhakane Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody whilst investigations continue.
