Gaborone United (GU)’s coach, Innocent Morapedi says his side needs to guard against a pompous mentality in sight of championship glory.

On Saturday, GU afternoon inched closer to the league title with a 1-0 win over Mahalapye Railway Highlanders at the National Stadium. The Reds are now three points away from landing their first league title since 2009. “Our ambition, we will still keep alight but we do not want to be pompous. Because this is football. We started on the first day that we want to have our names written in the GU archives.

GU, however, started the match at par with their struggling opponents and neither of the two teams showed real attacking intent in the first 10 minutes.

GU started to take a slight charge of the tie and came close on the 23rd minute when Thero Setsile headed wide off the post.

Two minutes later, Highlanders also had their say in the contest with Mompati Oabile trying from a freekick but Goitseone Phoko saved. A minute later, GU tried to catch their opponents on a break but the end results was Thatayaone Kgamanyane heading wide off the post. On the 35th minute, Obonwe Maome showed some quick feet to outwit his marker. His cross in to the box was headed wide by Kgamanyane.

It was tied 0-0 at the break. Two minutes into the second half, Kgamanyane set up Setsile who tucked in from close range to give his side the lead with his 15th of the league campaign.

The visitors on the other end showed threat on the break but their efforts were easily thwarted. Second half substitute, Joel Mogorosi headed wide his effort from Mpho Kgaswane’s free kick on the 79th minute.

The tie ended with the host bagging the maximum points on the day to stay four points clear at the top with three games to play.
