Notwane, Highlander­s, Gilport bite the dust

Notwane, Mahalapye Railways Highlander­s and Gilport Lions have finally succumbed to their poor showing in the Botswana Premier League this season when they relegated to the lower division on Saturday. The trio suffered defeats on Saturday afternoon paving their way to the Debswana First Division league with each side left with one match this season.

Notwane suffered a 2-1 defeat to Orapa United at Itekeng Stadium despite being the first to draw blood in the first half through Zambian forward, Joseph Pyele.

On other hand, Orapa United responded with two goals from Gofaone Mabaya and Leroy Muvunga, shutting all the hopes for Toronto to survive the dreaded axe. Notwane have been struggling the entire season, winning only five matches out of 29. Highlander­s will also play in the lower division next season following their 2-0 loss to Morupule Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

They have only managed to win four matches out of 29 and only scoring 21 goals while conceding 54 goals. Gilport

Lions on the other hand suffered the worst defeat of the weekend against Jwaneng Galaxy.

Leading goalscorer, Thabang Sesinyi scored a hattrick with two other goals coming from his strike partners, Wendell Rudath and Gaamangwe Sethibe. Gilport Lions’ consolatio­n goal came from Kagiso Selemela.

In the process, Sesinyi increased his tally of goals this season to 23 followed by Thatayaone Kgamanyane of Gaborone United (GU) with 20 goals. Kgamanyane scored a brace when GU played to a thrilling 3-3 draw against Sua Flamingoes at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium on Saturday. The Reds have already won the Premier League title.

Prisons XI and Mogoditsha­ne Fighters managed to survive relegation despite failing to win their matches on Saturday. Fighters only managed to play to a 1-1 draw against Masitaoka while Prisons XI suffered a 2-1 loss to BDF XI. In another match played on Saturday, Poloko Nkalolang’s solitary strike earned Security Systems maximum points against Police XI. Interestin­gly, Nkalolang was amongst the players released before the beginning of the season by the Jungle Kings.
