- Lesedi Mkhutshwa

FRANCISTOWN: Deputy divisional traffic officer for South Central, Senior Superintendent Boiki Mojalemotho is concerned about the continued loss of lives on the road due to car crashes.

According to Mojalemotho, at around 10pm on Saturday, they received a report of a fatal accident. He said the accident involving two cars, a Volkswagen Polo (VW) and a Honda Fit, took place in Sasakwe lands along the Kopong-Lentsweletau road. A 30-year-old man was driving the VW while a 24-year-old man was driving the Honda Fit. Mojalemotho said the two vehicles collided as one of the cars was in the wrong lane. He added that an 18-year-old girl who was the passenger in the Honda Fit died on the spot.

He indicated the driver of the Honda Fit is still hospitalised at Sidilega Private Hospital whereas the VW driver was treated and discharged on the same day.

Meanwhile, Mojalemotho said they are also investigating a serious accident which left one driver with serious injuries. He said the accident took place along the Mogoditshane road around 9.40am on Saturday. He said the crash involved a Hino truck and a Toyota Dyna.

Both drivers are men aged 29 years. Mojalemotho said they suspect that the accident was due to miscalculation of the following distance as the driver in front had stopped while the one behind crashed into the rear end of the other. Mojalemotho added: “One of the drivers lost both his legs and complains of chest pains.”

He said it is important for drivers to maintain a safe following distance, so that they have time to safely stop in case the vehicle in front of them stops abruptly. He urged motorists to always be vigilant and observe all traffic signs, signals and road markings.
