- Lebogang Mosikare Correspondent

KAVIMBA: Chief education officer of the Chobe region, Tetlanyo Chipendo has congratulated the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) for helping towards the achievement of a knowledge-based economy.

Speaking at Kavimba Primary School’s the prize-giving ceremony and handing over of the refurbished school library on Friday, Chipendo thanked BPC for its noble Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

“I am happy to be standing before you today to celebrate excellence made possible by BPC through their CSR initiative. You will agree with me that the mission of BPC is to power the economy with pride by supplying reliable, safe, competitive, and sustainable electricity. The noble gesture presented here today in the form of donation of library materials and prizes for best performers comes at an opportune time when the country through the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MESD) is marching towards building a knowledge-based economy and we are blessed to have a partner behind that quest. We thank BPC for this gesture,” said an ecstatic Chipendo.

MESD, Chipendo noted, is entrusted with the provision of quality education which puts the learner at its centre.

“We try by all means to meet the needs of our students through the provision of resources but in some instances, our efforts are limited by inadequate funds and the mitigation by great organisations like the BPC will forever be cherished. You indeed have brought light that will forever shine on Kavimba Primary School and I urge you to continue with that positive gesture and spread your good deeds in the education system across Botswana,” she said.

Chipendo continued: “I have been informed that today we are receiving library materials in the form of books and furniture and 103 prizes for the best-performing learners and members of staff. We all know the importance of a school library in learning.

It is the place for knowledge and thoughts and plays a fundamental part in supporting and developing the pleasure of reading and multiple literacies. So without the school library, the educational programme may not run effectively. The handing over of this library will undoubtedly bring the desired performance in this school.”

She urged the learners to keep up the hard work and share best practices with those who were not receiving prizes so that they excel as a team and collectively make Chobe an excellence hub.

“Utilise the opportunity of the support you get from teachers, parents, and stakeholders to reach the best of your abilities. Furthermore, you need to change your mindset and develop a good character and have a growth mindset. The mindset that is always open to new ideas with a bold belief that learning is a life-long process and excellence is the future,” Chipendo said.

She added: “The prizes that mark excellence on our students are mainly because of the selfless effort by our teachers. We thank the teachers for that and the role they play in shaping the future of these learners cannot be overemphasised. Please continue with that noble work. I also want to emphasise and remind you that you are at the centre of the paradigm shift of the nation of Botswana and its desire to build a knowledge-based economy. You are the key to delivering a 21st-century learner – the learner who is technologically inclined, inquisitive, and globally competitive.”

Chipendo called upon all educators (parents, teachers, stakeholders, mentors, and chiefs) to open a new world for the learners.

“These children’s dreams are dependent on us. Let us join hands and light up the future of these innocent souls. Our wisdom and guidance remain the pillar of their academic success,” Chipendo emphasised.
