Gesture resonates with Maduo26 Strategy

KAVIMBA: The refurbishment of Kavimba Primary School’s library and sponsoring of the school prize-giving ceremony resonates with the Botswana Power Corporation’s (BPC) core value of the Maduo26 Strategy.

BPC CEO, David Kgoboko was speaking on Friday when giving a keynote address during the school prize-giving ceremony and handing over of the refurbished school library.

“Let me start by taking this moment to state that we cherish our blossoming relationship with the Kavimba community and Primary School. The first time we were here was in 2018 when we donated solar school bags. The school bags have solar-powered lights which can be used for studying at night. I am confident that the bags still play a huge role in assisting students to excel in their studies, especially those who do not have access to electricity,” a jovial Kgoboko said.

The BPC’s involvement in the ceremony, Kgoboko underscored, marked yet another step in growing the bond between the electricity authority and Kavimba Primary School. “It resonates with one of our core values of Maduo26 Strategy of putting our people first. I am very happy and excited that we are living and espousing this value of putting our employees, customers, and the community we serve first. BPC’s role in the country is far-reaching and extends beyond our mandate of generating, transmitting and distributing electricity as our operations touch the lives of every Motswana including the residents of Kavimba. Our resolve towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives demonstrates our compassion and kindness to the communities that we serve,” Kgoboko said.

He added: “In this regard, we have extended a helping hand in refurbishing the Kavimba Primary School library and providing new tables, chairs, bean bags, bookshelves, floor tiles, and a mat. This gesture intends to ensure that students have a conducive and friendly learning environment. We are also here to celebrate the academic success and stellar performance of our students. This prize-giving ceremony is meant to motivate students and inculcates a culture of excellence by encouraging students to focus on their studies, uphold a high standard of cleanliness, persevere, and strive for continuous improvement. ”

The seed that BPC planted on Friday, Kgoboko noted, will go a long way in transforming the pupils into internationally sought-after graduates, workers, artists, athletes and successful entrepreneurs. “Today’s achievers will be awarded certificates and hampers valued at P22,000. Ladies and gentlemen once more, join me as I congratulate the 2022 best performers. It would be remiss of me not to emphasise the need to tread carefully when dealing with electricity despite its importance in our daily lives. Electricity infrastructure and equipment (poles, lines, transformer boxes, and others) can pose a danger if safety precautions are not resolved. One of BPC’s core values is Zero-Harm. The value is entrenched in the way we undertake our operations as BPC and in its very fabric, we have pledged that no person will be harmed by our operations, no equipment will be damaged, we will not degrade the environment, and we will report unsafe acts and near misses,” Kgoboko underpinned. To achieve zero harm, Kgoboko stated, BPC is working closely with the nation at large, communities, and most importantly schools to educate students about the dangers of electricity. “We also impart knowledge on how to deal with potentially harmful or lethal situations posed by electricity. The safety outreach programme has commenced and I have no doubt in my mind that these life-saving messages are reaching Kavimba and its surrounding communities. I urge everyone here to always be vigilant and report potential hazards to BPC. This will help us to keep ourselves safe and preserve the lives of our people, especially our precious students who are the future of this country. I would like to encourage the Kavimba community and parents to continue to take a keen interest in the education of their children by closely monitoring their academic performance and positively moulding their character. It goes without saying that ‘it takes a whole village to raise a child,’” said Kgoboko. He also recognised teachers for their relentless efforts in providing quality education to the pupils.

“Furthermore, I would like to emphasise that without them we would not be here today to celebrate this momentous occasion. BPC is humbled and proud to be in this harmonious relationship with the Kavimba community. “Our intent is to transpose this infectious relationship to other communities across the country resources permitting. I wish the people of Kavimba and all the students here present prosperity in all their future endeavours,” Kgoboko said.
