Selebi-Phikwe teacher in drug possession bust

- Lesedi Mkhutshwa Correspondent

FRANCISTOWN: Selebi-Phikwe po lice arrested four Batswana including a 47-year-old teacher on Friday evening for drug possession.

According to Selebi-Phikwe Police Station commander, Nicholas Kadiatla, the quartet was arrested at Phase 1 location in Selebi-Phikwe.

He confirmed that the four suspects are unemployed men aged between 28 and 38 years, including the 47-year-old woman who is a teacher at the Selebi-Phikwe Technical College.

He said the four were caught red-handed with 17 sachets of a green-like substance suspected to be dagga. The substance is approximately about 60 grammes, he added.

Kadiatla said they searched the suspects and found the suspected drugs in their pockets in a stop-and-search activity. The action is part of the 60 Days Of Action On Crime And Road Safety. He said they suspect that the suspects are selling the drugs because they are packaged in small qualities. The Selebi-Phikwe police boss also revealed that two of the suspects are repeat offenders.

“The duo was arrested on September 9 and was caught red-handed with sachets with a white substance suspected to be cocaine. The two have a pending case as they are still awaiting results,” he added.

Kadiatla indicated that the suspects were released from police custody whilst they are awaiting results from the forensic lab. If the results are positive, the suspect will appear before the Selebi-Phikwe Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Selebi-Phikwe police boss is concerned about the rising cases of drug possession in his policing area. He said last month they arrested a Mmadinare Senior School teenager after he was found in possession of drugs on the school premises.

The Form 5 boarding student was found in possession of eight sachets of a greenlike substance suspected to be dagga. The police suspect that the student was selling the drugs and they are yet to identify his supplier.
