f you are looking for a comforting meal, that’s ready in minutes then a Motlapiso is a good idea. With an option of making it all from scratch, you are allowed to use shortcuts. I make my magwinya using 2 ingredient Nutriday dough. Since discoverin­g 2i dough, we have learnt to create a number of the fluffiest breads, all of which are ready in an instant. It cuts prep time in half because you don’t have to wait for the bread to proof. You need to sample the Motlapiso in order to appreciate what it is all about. Although it is a bit tricky to eat, it compensate­s with an explosion in the mouth that can only be found in the Hinds spiced filling.

I’m especially intrigued by the new Hinds curry range, which caters for every palate, even for those who are not friends with hot food can find a suitable curry of choice. We recently discovered that our eldest has some kind of allergy and could only self deduce it to food. Since his initial reaction, we had to be intentiona­l about getting medical attention and in the interim while waiting for an appointmen­t try to identify what he might have reacted to and avoid certain foods which are common allergens.

This came as a surprise, and was nothing we could have been prepared for. However, armed with a little knowledge, we were able to not only see signs but to manage the situation. All this activity made me realise how important it is to be in the know about allergies, especially as a lot of them now can be caused by food, something that is a daily intake for all.

Allergies include foods, animals, pollen, mold, dust mites, medication­s, latex, insect stings, cockroache­s, and perfumes/ household chemicals. Common food allergies include milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, soy, fish, and shellfish to name a few. Wheat allergies are a condition in which the body’s immune system considers such a substance as a harmful “invader” and overreacts to it. After seeing the Dr, it would appear that our boy’s allergy is an environmen­tal one and not food. However we are still implementi­ng a strategic eating plan to rule out food allergies entirely.

Motlapiso is a messy dish to eat. There isn’t much grace in all honesty, in eating one of these, but everything is in the taste and satisfacti­on (think double pattie burgers for contexts, or sloppy joes). Once you pick it up, the games begin, some of the filling starts to fall out and when you take your first big bite, a little sauce might dribble down your hand, ke gore go le busy..lol.

You have to approach it with tact to come out on top and its real fun to eat. Don’t forget to lick your lips clean or use a serviette to avoid the smear of yumminess on your face because it will be there.. ha ha! By the end of the week I got an opportunit­y to wind down and step out of the barracks, excuse me, kitchen..lol, and enjoy being treated a bit as I got to enjoy some meal time at the famous Chatters restaurant in the Cresta Lodge Gaborone premises.

This was all gearing up for a bubbly and scent curated Mother’s Day at Cresta, which has me looking forward to more of what they have planned for the year. Ingredient­s

500g ground beef

1 medium onion, chopped 1 bell pepper, chopped

1 can Rhodes tomato

Chilli powder, to taste

1 stp garlic powder

1 tsp Hinds cayenne pepper Salt to taste

1 tsp Hinds curry

Instructio­ns

Brown beef and drain the grease.

Add onion and bell pepper and cook till onion is clear. Add spices and tomato sauce and cook for 5 mins. Cut a Legwinya in half to create a pocket and load it up with your filling and enjoy.

The mince on its own makes for a great leftovers, which can be served with rice or pasta.
