STEM COMPETITIONS

-

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. There is a global move of shifting from resource-based economies to knowledge-based economies. STEM stands out when it comes to the knowledge that students, academics and every person should acquire, seeing that our everyday lives are increasingly shaped by and dependent on technological achievements. Knowledge of STEM subjects will help every person to become a more confident citizen of the world.

We have mostly used technology developed by other countries; now is the time to invent technology. To do this, our citizens should be equipped from a tender age with the relevant (STEM) skills. Science discovers the laws that control microscopic and macroscopic aspects of our universe. Technology makes use of these laws to make products that makes our lives more comfortable while Engineering looks at the best technology to meet a particular need by considering factors such as energy efficiency, pollution as well as development and maintenance costs of the products. Mathematics is the glue that allows the other 3 disciplines to communicate numerically.

As Legae Academy, we ran a competition to design posters, writing articles and making STEM related models. The aim of the competition was to come up with articles that could be used to decorate our school hall for our Awards Ceremony themed ‘Promoting STEM education through stakeholder participation and collaboration’.

This competition gave our students an opportunity to awaken the science genius in them and to explore STEM concepts deeper. It has definitely aroused their curiosity and prepared them for further research in the various fields.
