SOCIAL MEDIA ROUND UP

- BY TUMISANG DALE RANKOPO

UNSURPRISINGLY, Coronavirus was at the heart of many social media conversations this week.

In addition to the deadly COVID-19, your weekly round-up features the usual newsmakers as well as some slightly unexpected ones!

ATI CALLS OUT MANAGER

Local superstar, ATI, recently took to social media accusing his manager, Kaytwo, of sleeping with women on the premise he would later introduce them to the singer. Kaytwo took it upon himself to respond, sparking a heated back and forth between the two.

Many commended the ‘ Komirrso’ hitmaker for not hiding his friend to save face but exposing him and condemning him publicly. “Way to go for taking a stand against rapists even within your own circle,” read one comment.

However, another Facebook user questioned how long ATI knew about this and whether or not he was in any way involved.

This may not be the last we hear of this slightly sticky situation.

CIGAR LOUNGE OFFERS CORONA

With the world seemingly at a standstill as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread fear and misery, many are trying to find a little light amid these dark times.

One establishment seemingly intent on spreading a bit of humour is Cigar Lounge, who this week posted on their social media, “We also have a case of Corona. Come and we will serve. Weekend has officially started.”

This was obviously in reference to the popular Corona alcoholic beverage. However, some found the comment distasteful considering the deadly seriousness of the virus.

“You are making jokes while people are dying, very nice of you,” blasted one Twitter user, while another slightly stinging comment took a different tact, noting, “They want to be Nando’s so badly.”

However, others seemed unconcerned, with one simply stating, “I’ll be there!”

Perhaps the joke wasn’t that bad after all – what do you think?

ATTACK OF THE BEES IN GHETTO

This Sunday, the Orange FA Cup fixture between Calendar Stars and Jwaneng Fighters endured an unusual sting in the tail. The match, played at the Old Francistown Stadium, was halted midway through the second half after a swarm of bees descended on the venue.

The fixture was broadcast live on BTV as players, officials and spectators fled from the angry swarm. A few were even taken to hospital after receiving multiple stings – ouch!

“That was so sad bathong, I’m so traumatised like I was there,” said one upset Facebook user. Another comment read, “Who says there is no witchcraft in football? Fighters were fighting the result by any means.”

Thankfully, there were no fatalities. Meanwhile, the game ended in a 2-1 victory to Calendar Stars, a result that saw the Ghettobased side fly into the tournament’s quarterfinals.

THE GROOVING GIRL WITH THE WHISTLE

A video of a young lady blowing her whistle at a party has been making the rounds on social media. Although the video itself seems harmless, wholesome fun, the memes that stemmed from it sent the short clip viral.

“When the government says everyone should stay home but everyone is out partying,” was one of the more popular captions attached to the meme.

The video caught on so quickly that it reached DJ Maphorisa, with the South African superstar admitting he has a crush on the lady. Who knows, maybe social media can hook them up!

EVERYTHING IS CANCELLED

This week, in a bid to combat the global Coronavirus pandemic, the Government of Botswana published a press release banning travel to and from the worst affected countries.

Furthermore, large public gatherings were also suspended. This led to promoters and event organisers postponing their upcoming events, including Franco’s Soul Fill Up, Yarona FM Awards, The Hamptons Jazz Festival and others.

Social media was in mourning for their entertainment shows, bars and sporting events being suspended.

“Now what will I do with my weekends, spend it with my family? That’s just ridiculous!” exclaimed one Facebook user.

While many are upset at the unheralded situation, remember that your health comes first.
