FASHION EDITOR’S TRICKS ON LAYERING

-

What I am loving this week - layering. As temperatures slowly drop, I am leaning towards transitional style like layering.

Layering is a critical style skill to elevate clothes to outfits, not just piling of them but skillfully doing so! The obvious function of layering is heatretention. Not only does it elevate outfits, layering is also a way to reinvigorate your wardrobe, without extra expense. Here are some tips to consider when pulling out layering for style maximisation.

TIPS ON WINTER LAYERING

INNER LAYERING: Start with a shirt, a basic T or a polo neck. Undershirts are pretty much the top dog here, and it’s worth your while to invest in a quality undershirt that fits well with no hot spots.

Then start to add layers by incorporating a sweater, or cardigan. If you want colour, or texture, now is the time.

OUTWEAR: More onto outwear; if you added a colourful layer of a blazer, jacket or cardigan, make sure your outwear is neutral to balance the colours. If your outwear is colourful then keep your layers neutral. You may add a belt to accentuate the waistline. Do not underestimate the power of a coloured belt.

ACCESSORIES: Scarves make for the style statement in layering. Throw it on a plain look and your outfit is instantly upgraded and layered. Do not go overboard with texture on gloves if you already have texture on your outfit.

TEXTURE: If you want to wear one colour, try mixing heavier and softer textures, like wool, silk, cotton, leather, or insert a different texture as the mid-layer.

WARDROBE:

Look for options that are versatile and give you the option to mix and match for multiple different looks. This should be practical when you want to remove a layer when temperatures rise during the day.

Pay attention to proportions and lengths. Typically, you want short layers underneath and long layers on top.
