An 80-year-old man accused of biting his wife’s breasts, beating her with a belt and then threatening to kill her, was dragged before court this week.

Tawana Ntomodi has his old age to thank for keeping him out of jail. Despite the prosecution’s best efforts to see him locked up, Molepolole Magistrates’ Court granted the elder bail on Tuesday.

Tawana is facing one count of threat to kill and another for assault occasioning bodily harm after allegedly battering his wife black and blue at their home in Mollale ward last Thursday (15th April).

Amid a barrage of punches, sinking his teeth into her breasts and smacking her over the head with his belt, the pensioner supposedly warned 68-year-old Orometse Ntomodi, “Ke tla go bolaya mosadi ke wena (I will kill you, woman).”

Although they have been married for 15 years, Tawana reportedly developed a habit of beating his wife in recent times.

According to the police, the latest bout of violence occurred after Tawana returned from the lands and asked Orometse where his measuring tape was.

“When the wife told him that their son took it, the old man allegedly started shouting at her, saying she should be responsible for all his things. He accused her of not being raised properly and started threatening to kill her, removing his belt from the trousers and beating her up,” disclosed a police source.

The pensioner is said to have punched and slapped his wife repeatedly as well as bizarrely biting her on both breasts. It is rumoured Oromotse also grabbed a knife, which fell from her husband’s pocket and hid it in her dress.

Having been set conditional bail requiring two P1,500 sureties, Tawana’s daughter and niece turned up just in time. As the police van was about to leave for prison, the old man’s relatives arrived and signed him.

The police immediately removed his leg irons and handcuffs, releasing him to go home with his relatives. Despite being set free, he displayed little emotion. Having been banned from seeing his wife, Tawana informed the cops and court he would stay at masimo.

He will appear again for mention on 4th May.
