A Mmankgodi woman who set fire to her baby daddy’s car, effectively blowing it up outside Thamaga Police Station last year, has admitted her guilt.

Appearing before Molepolole Magistrates’ Court this week, 33-year-old Thato Thobega pleaded guilty to causing malicious damage to property.

The fiery incident played out on 6th March, 2020, shortly after Thobega and her then boyfriend, Kenanao Pholo, had driven to Thamaga from Gaborone.

According to Thamaga Station Commander, Moses Kwarare, during the 50km drive the couple - who have a child together - started arguing, with Thobega repeatedly accusing Pholo of sleeping with other women. Although he denied cheating on her, his denials only served to enrage Thobega further.

“The duo had a misunderstanding on the way and upon their arrival in Thamaga, they proceeded to the police station. The boyfriend intending to report to the police that his girlfriend had been harassing her on the way,” explained the Superintendent.

While Pholo was being attended to by the cops, Thobega snuck away to the car - a white Corolla valued at P18,000 - which was parked in front of the police station. She then opened the petrol tank and tossed a match down it, instantly setting the car on fire.

The vehicle exploded, with the fireball quickly reducing it to scraps. The remaining skeleton is an exhibit and remains at Thamaga Police Station - not far from where it burnt to ashes!

The case was adjourned for facts presentation on 12th May before Gender Based Violence (GBV) Magistrate, Keabetswe Majuta, in Thamaga.

Should the Magistrate choose to throw the full weight of the law at Thobega, she could possibly be jailed for five years. She is currently out on bail.
