Back on August 9th, 2009 the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) announced its first batch of female soldiers.
Speaking to the media in a briefing announcing the candidates, Brigadier George Tlhalerwa said that after advertising for female cadet officers, the BDF received a total of 1,238 applications out of which 865 had degrees. He added that they had to increase the age limit to accommodate candidates with special skills such as dentists and doctors. The first batch of women to join the BDF soon after left for a 12-month training stint in Tanzania.
