Baby ‘dumper’ appears in court

- BY SHARON MATHALA

A mother who is accused of dumping her newborn baby will have to wait a little longer to know her fate after the court pushed her trial dates further into the future.

Appearing in court this week for her arraignment, Mabedi Motlogelwa was finally charged for her 2019 offence.

Her charge sheet states that Motlogelwa (31) on 6th September, 2019 at Masimola ward in Mmopane, having been delivered of a child, endeavoured by secret disposition of the dead body of her newborn child, to conceal the birth of the said child.

The charge, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years behind bars, was read out to the accused and plea was reserved.

Village Senior Magistrate, Tshepo Thedi, however, ruled that trial dates will be set in her next mention on August 31st and further granted the accused mother bail on condition that she appears before the court as and when needed.

For her part, Motlogelwa attempted to tell the court what exactly happened on the day but the court refused to listen stating that she will only be allowed to give evidence during trial.

Case continues.
