MAN BITES COP

- BY SHARON MATHALA

IN a bizarre incident that left Gathwane Police Station with blood on the floor and officers in shock recently, an enraged man bit a police officer’s thumb and cut off his ear in the charge office.

The biter, 41-year-old Thuto Maduke, appeared before the Lobatse Magistrate this week facing a single count of grievous harm, which was read out to him.

Temperamental Maduke could go to jail for a period of not less than seven years, if he is found guilty.

According to his charge sheet, Maduke “on 29th August, 2022 at Gathwane police post in Gathwane village without lawful excuse unlawfully wounded one Julian Sikwane by biting him with teeth, resulting in cutting off his left ear and sustaining a cut of the left thumb.”

The Voice has established that Maduke had gone to the police station for an interrogation by police officers on suspicions that he and his girfriend had stolen a phone at a wedding.

Apparently an altercation ensued and in the process Maduke bit off the officer’s ear. The police officer has since been hospitalised and is recuperating.

In his defence, Maduke said it was the police officer who attacked him and his girlfriend first while they were in the charge office.

The case continues today for bail application.
