(BCP) released a statement this week calling for action against Minister Kabo Morwaeng and Chief Justice, Terrence Rannowane.
It is alleged the pair tried to influence the decision of a judge presiding the case of former minister, Thapelo Matsheka. The statement reads, “Whilst no person should interfere with the independence of the judiciary under any circumstances, it becomes scary and scandalous to the extreme if one of such person seeking to bring undue pressure to bear on a judge deciding a matter is the chief justice.”
Social media took their chance to be judge, jury and executioner.
“In Africa generally and Botswana particularly, the independence of the Judiciary is a myth and a pipe-dream,” remarked one onlooker. Another comment reads, “Kabo Morwaeng and Rannowane should resign or be fired with immediate effect.” A slightly different perspective pointed out, “Insufficient evidence, if Morwaeng denies, it will be his word against that of a Judge. Which one would you believe based on what?” These are certainly big allegations.
