THE COURAGE TO SHINE
WHEN you type ‘Morweetsana’ into Google, you are met with a 2018 hit from Skavenja, followed by several other songs bearing identical titles.
However, a Traditional artist by the same name is hoping this will soon change as she strives to make it big in the music industry.
Fresh from dropping her first album last month, the backing singer-turned-main act tells Voice Entertainment she penned the seventracked ‘Lerato la Ditlhare’ to give courage to mentally-challenged individuals.
Indeed, lacking in self-confidence, courage is something the 26-year-old Serowe-based songstress needed in abundance to realise her musical dream.
“I never had the belief that I could sing nor write the song even though I grew up singing at church. I then joined Kuka La Setso Group as a dancer. They eventually gave me a chance to lead some of their songs and sometimes did backing vocals, which gave me the confidence to keep working hard,” the singer, born Kaone Boatametse, tells Voice Entertainment, adding her LP has sold reasonably well since its release on 10th September.
Despite her relative inexperience, Morweetsana’s music carries a profound message as she looks to make a real impact on people’s lives.
“Some of the songs talk about the experiences we come across as individuals and how we can best tackle them in order to be whole. There is a track titled ‘Cry of Africa’ in which I call upon God to look over our country on mushrooming issues such as human trafficking, rape and murder just to mention a few,” said Morweetsana, who went solo in March last year with a double single dubbed ‘Ba a Njela’ and ‘Go Rileng’ respectively.
Going forward, the artiste has ambitions of becoming a household name - and one that
Google will instantly recognise!
“I hope to feature high profile artists such as Culture Spears and Mma Ausi as I embark on the road to being the next big thing in the industry. Eventually, I want to penetrate the international market and showcase our unique culture to the world through traditional dance music.”
