SEXUAL PEVERT PLEADS ILLITERACY IN COURT

- With Francinah Baaitse-mmana BY CATHERINE MOEMEDI

The case management conference, which was scheduled for Monday in the case of an 80-year -old pensioner accused of repeatedly sexually molesting his 12-year-old stepdaughter, has been postponed.

The old man told Maun Magistrates’ Court that he was illiterate therefore could not comprehend the information contained in the statements he was served with.

“I have the papers with me, but I cannot read . I do not know what is written in them,” said the old man.

The case management conference was set after the old man, who cannot be named to protect the victim, defended his immoral acts on two counts of the three he was charged with.

He admitted to having sexual intercourse with the little girl in his bedroom back in July 2019, insisting she readily agreed to sleep with him after returning home from school. The disgraced elder further noted they only stopped when her mother - his girlfriend - arrived home from work and almost walked in on them.

He said the next encounter did not take place until almost a year later, when, sometime between May and June 2020, he slept with her again. This time the act was interrupted by a friend of the girl’s, who came round calling on her.

However, he admitted force was used in the third incident, on October 17th, 2020, when she tried to resist his advances.

Magistrate Mulalo gave him a chance to find someone who will read for him and explain what is written in the statements as he needs to state which witnesses he would be admitting so that they do not have to be brought to court to testify in person.

He was caught in the act by his brother and nephew, who saw him in action through an open window.

The matter has been postponed to October 31st for case management conference.
