TRUCKER PERISHES IN NATA ROAD ACCIDENT

- BY CHRISTINAH MOTLHABANE

A truck driver lost his life in Nata on Sunday morning after crashing into an oncoming truck in the middle of the village.

The fatal crash occurred along the A3 road near Choppies supermarket, with the deceased, a 29-year-old male, heading towards Francistown.

According to Nata Station Commander, Begah Nawa, his officers were informed of the accident at around 7am.

“We rushed to the scene where both drivers were taken to the local clinic. Sadly, one of the men succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival. Meanwhile, the other driver, a 34-year-old man who was driving towards Kazungula, was treated and discharged the same day. Both drivers are foreigners,” said Nawa, adding police ethics did not permit him to disclose their nationalities.

He did, however, reveal the deceased was transporting copper dust while the other truck was carrying silicon.

Nawa told The Voice this was the third road accident involving trucks in his jurisdiction since the start of the year but the first that turned fatal.

“It is very sad to see lives being lost on the road. I advise truck drivers to always rest whenever they feel tired,” said the police boss, hastily adding he was not suggesting fatigue was to blame in this incident.

“We are still investigating,” he said.
