TOUGH WEEKEND FOR SQUASH TEAM

- BY TSHEPO KEHIMILE

THE National Squash Team is set to compete at the Squash Federation of Africa Senior Championships scheduled for Zimbabwe this Friday. Botswana has sent a team of seven players to face some of Africa’s top players.

The boys’ team comprises Antonio Tawana, 23; Agang Motlhagodi, 21; and Elliot Sibanda, 23; while the ladies’ are Neo

Phatsima, Angel Otshabeng, Peo Gosalamang, who are all 16, and Chadiwa Moyo, aged 23.

In an interview with Voice Sport this week, national team mentor, Koketso Ntshebe, wasn’t too confident of his team’s chances in Zimbabwe.

“To be frank, I’m not too sure that we can do well because the tournament is physically demanding. We haven’t played many preparatory tournaments because of lack of funds, but I believe my young squad can defy the odds,” said Ntshebe.

Despite his misgivings about their prospects, Ntshebe still believes his team is capable of finishing in the top four, in a tournament that includes tough opponents such as Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria and Zambia.

According to Ntshebe, action will start with an elimination round of individuals, where a pool of 64 players will face off.

“It’ll then be followed by a team event which will be played to the best of three. This means we’ve to win our first two matches in order to proceed further,” he said.
