ACCUSED KILLER’S PLEA FALLS ON DEATH EARS

- BY CATHERINE MOEMEDI

A Zimbabwean man accused of battering his 35-year-old Motswana girlfriend to death pleaded for bail in vain before the Maun Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

As the family bread winner, the illegal immigrant, Eric Mathew Nyoni, 35, expressed concern for his two minor children’s welfare, begging to be set free so he can care for them.

“I believe I have complied with the law to allow investigations to run smoothly. I am a handyman, I survive on odd jobs and my children depend on me as their sole provider. The more time I spend in prison, the more they will be suffering out there!” said Nyoni.

Updating the court on the status of the matter, the prosecution revealed investigations were ongoing.

“We are still waiting for some witness statements and the postmortem report. Today was scheduled for bail arguments, however, the investigating officer is currently attending a short course, which is expected to end on Friday,” said the prosecutor.

According to court papers, the couple had a fall-out on the night of October 11th when Nyoni battered Kebatshabile Machaa with his fists to death in their rented room at Sanyedi ward in Maun.

After the fatal assault, Nyoni reportedly left their house to go drinking only to return home at 4am to a dead body.

The accused killer is said to have later gone to Maun police to report that he had found his girlfriend dead in their house after their fight the night before. He was subsequently arrested and charged for the murder while his girlfriend was laid to rest in her home village of Etsha.
