OFF TO EGYPT

-

Drawn in Pool A, the local lads begin their campaign with a tough opening day encounter against the hosts.

The top ranked team in Africa, the Egyptians, are defending champions and heavy favourites to retain their crown won in Uganda three years ago.

Clashes with Rwanda and Madagascar follow the curtainraiser as Team BW look to improve on their quarter-final finish in Kampala last time out - a performance that saw their continental ranking improve three places to their current position of fifth.

Speaking to Voice Sport through the week, National Team Coach, Tiro Serumola, revealed confidence in the camp was high ahead of Thursday’s (1st December) departure for North Africa.

“We have been busy and have tried by all means to prepare the boys for this big tournament. Last month, the team travelled to Zimbabwe to play with local sides there and our boys emerged victorious. We also travelled to South Africa to play with South African league teams and we scooped position two. I can say the boys are ready for the tournament,” said an optimistic Serumola.

Despite their relative inexperience at international level, the coach has high hopes for his highflying troops.

“All of the boys in camp, it will be their first time playing at the FIBA 3x3 and also their first ever big tournament; they are very excited and only waiting to hoop,” he said.

Accompanying the five-man playing squad on the journey to the tip of Africa will be Coach Serumola, the team manager and a physician.

In the breathless, non-stop, all-action sport that is 3x3 basketball, Voice Sport wish Team BW all the best, fly the flag high, boys!
