F/TOWN GETS FACELIFT
P23 million allocated for road maintenance
The City of Francistown’s new Town Clerk, Stephen Motlogelwa, has hit the ground running to improve the city’s aesthetic look.
The council is undertaking maintenance road works centered around roads within the Central Business District (CBD), of which 8km is asphalt overlay and 2km for resealing of the access road to Jubilee Referral Hospital and spot improvement on New Bridge road. Last week, the council approved two Tender Variation requests from Quinton Express (PTY) LTD as the project contractor for rockbedding and cementing works on John Nswazwi Avenue and Selous Avenue.
Both roads had dire underground water seepage problems that needed a permanent solution.
According to Motlogelwa, the 2.8km Kazungula Road will also be maintained.
The works include facilitation of asphalt overlay on the left lane from ET shops facing Petro Hyper filling station.
“In addition, we have three projects on pothole patching, which are expected to start soon for each constituency. Due to
budgetary constraints, main roads will be prioritised and this will be augmented by the inhouse maintenance,” Motlogelwa told The Voice in an interview.
The TC further revealed that P23 million has been allocated for the works with P18 million being maintenance development while P5 million is under Road Levy Fund.
He said they anticipate to
complete the maintenance works by end of June 2023.
“Maintenance works for roads is a continuous process, there’s reactive or routine maintenance, which the council is attending to on a daily basis, like grass cutting, potholes patching,” he said.
He said through the next recurrent budget 2023/24, about 10ha of roads reserve will be debushed with a budget of P200,000.
