THE inaugural annual Botswana Women Sports Awards take place this Saturday at Lekedi Football Centre. Over 300 athletes, administrators and sports enthusiasts will grace the event where deserving women will be recognised for their sporting excellence.

The awards, which are a collaboration between Inside BW Women Sports, WASBO and the Botswana National Sports Commission, will also pay tribute to men who have and continue to make significant contribution to the growth of women sports in Botswana as well as organisations that have prioritised women sports as part of their strategies.

Speaking to Voice Sport on Wednesday, event Coordinator, Kesego Okie, said the awards aim to recognise and celebrate the country’s female sports legends across the different sporting codes. “Gender parity in sports is a global concern with unequal recognition of athletes per gender. In the context of Botswana, women in sports continue to demonstrate resilience, excellence and results in all disciplines that include, athletes, coaches, administrators and umpires,” said Okie.

Okie further revealed that last week the Okavango Diamond Company announced a P10,000 sponsorship towards the event,

which she said this will go a long way in ensuring the success of the awards. She indicated that the Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority has also volunteered to sponsor two awards, being Administrator of the Year and Young Promising Female Athlete of the Year.

Okie confirmed that 17 categories will be rewarded in the muchawaited inaugural awards, highlighting that the Sportswoman of the Year with Disability, Coach of the Year and Team of the Year are some of the coveted categories to look out for. Papadi Sports has also sponsored with trophies for all the categories.
