COSBOTS – BOMU UNITE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST SUBSTANCE ABUSE

-

Copyright Society of Botswana (COSBOTS) have teamed up with Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU)ON a campaign to warn artists of the dangers of substance abuse, how it destroys their talent and ultimately ruins their lives.

As part of the initiative, titled ‘Mental Health – Drug and Substance Abuse in the Creative Industry’, workshops were held in Francistown and Gaborone under the theme: ‘Sobriety is Talent above the Influence’. Giving welcome remarks, COSBOTS Vice Board-chairperson Ookeditse James Moyambo indicated that artists are the custodians of cultural heritage and architects of narratives that have the power to redefine perceptions and instigate societal transformation. He continued to say that if they are trapped in the clutches of addiction how will they shoulder their immense responsibility to create. “Breaking the chains of addiction and reclaiming our mental fortitude is within our grasp. Let us harness our collective voice as artists to send a message on substance abuse and mental health,” he said. Outlining the campaign’s objectives, BOMU President, Fresh Phemelo Lesokwane explained that they intend to raise artists’awareness on the dangers of substance abuse. As well as workshops, Lesokwane revealed they plan to embark on an extensive multimedia drive to reach a wider audience. The BOMU President noted it was time for change. “We must break the stigma surrounding mental health and substance abuse and provide support and resources to those in need. Counseling, therapy, medication, and support groups can all be helpful tools. As a society, we must also work towards creating a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes mental health and well-being,” Lesokwane said. Speaking at the Francistown event, Deputy Mayor Lesego Kwambala admitted that it is government’s duty to tackle substance abuse head on. “We must also ensure there are avenues for rehabilitation and support for those who are struggling with addiction,” urged Kwambala. The campaign continued on Tuesday (16 April) in Gaborone at Tsholofelo Community Hall, attracting various artists from across Greater Gaborone. Delivering the keynote address, Gaborone Deputy Mayor, Oduetse Tautona called for the creative sector to unite. “Seeking help is a sign of strength. Change does not happen overnight, it will require commitment and collaborative efforts to save the creative industry. A forum of this nature is a welcome development. It can help in breaking chains of addiction, depression and anxiety since it provides dialogue amongst creative’s,” highlighted Tautona. Botswana Substance Abuse Support Network (BOSASNET) Outreach Coordinator, Toro Letebele urged creatives to trust their talent. “Education is critical in offering skills and training such that we can fight this scourge. You have the power to push your art without substance use; you can do a good job without use of drugs!” encouraged Letebele, adding BOSASNET are available to offer their services. Sharing his testimony, popular radio presenter, Kgosi ‘Dollar Mac’ Kgosidintsi revealed he was a recovering drug addict. “At 18 years old I had many jobs and access to money therefore I found myself in drugs. I battled and lost jobs on the way. It’s a serious challenge; drugs are around but we can fight this battle together and win!” insisted Kgosidintsi. For her part, National Arts Council Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Shombi Ellis said it is no secret that substance abuse is rife in the creative sector. “We know sometimes drugs are used as coping mechanisms for problems such as depression, stress and anxiety. It’s time for us to tackle the problem to protect our artists. We are here to support, develop and protect you because we want artists to continue to contribute to the industry,” said Ellis.
