Borneo Insider's Guide

Another quarter of the year gone, another issue of BIG magazine. This July, with the ghosts of Hari Raya’s assortment of delicious kueh still on our hips, we turn to the only thing that can snap us out of our sugar-crazed state: fitness. We’ve been to all the classes – now we’re just looking to get inspired.

And in Brunei, what’s more inspiring than the nation’s fittest female? We sit down with Nina Juna to find out what makes this Crossfit Queen tick. On the other side of the island, we focus on two individuals set to make a change in the athletics sports world in Sabah: Louis Pang, who carried the Sabah cycling team to new heights against all odds; and Raynold Peter, who is carving the way forward for young champions with the Humansport Athletics Club. Over in Sarawak, we set our sights on those eschewing the traditional forms of exercise with a new fitness revolution, putting a spotlight on the trendiest workouts in the Cat City: boxing, BJJ, and group fitness classes with The Jungle Body.

We also sit down and talk with Mohammad Vol who - aside from taking fantastic bird and nature photos – is also one heck of a mountain trekker. We talk to him as he prepares to undergo the grueling K2 Gondogoro La Trek – one of the most savage trails in the world, with one of the best views.

We were also fortunate to go on two trips this issue. Our publisher Wan Zainal took a sojourn to Seoul and enjoyed the luxury of Four Seasons Hotel Seoul, while our Assistant Editor Sheyenne took a quick trip to Kuala Lumpur to check out what’s going on in the world of medical tourism. We thank the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) for taking us on this lovely, eyeopening trip.

And so the third quarter of the year is among us, Ramadan and Hari Raya is done and dusted, Game of Thrones has finally ended, but we’ve got a lot more coming up this year to be excited about. Check out our website, borneoinsidersguide.com, to see what we get up to in between issues, and follow us on Instagram and Facebook for updates.

Until then, we’ll see you in October!
