If you feel like going on a little island day trip to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, you can simply hop on a boat and get whisked away to Bungaraya Island Resort. Nestled in the warm and idyllic island sanctuary of Polish Bay, off Gaya Island, Bungaraya welcomes both holidaymakers and day trip guests (with prior booking). Depending on the weather, day trip guests can spend a couple of hours enjoying the beach, go on a short jungle trek and finally, enjoy a hearty lunch at the Longhouse Restaurant.

Located at the main building, this is the resort’s main restaurant. Surrounded by a pristine tropical rainforest, overlooking the sparkling waters of the South China Sea, Bungaraya Island Resort offers a dose of luxury and relaxation. Being built on a gazetted national park, a trip to the resort is like a mini safari adventure in itself. On any given day, you may be lucky enough to spot wildlife, such as monitor lizards, macaques and the resort’s resident hornbill, Kiky.

Open for lunch and dinner, the Longhouse can comfortably accommodate 70 people for a normal meal seating and 100 people for standing cocktail. The restaurant has an alfresco setting and a rustic theme that is reminiscent of the traditional Murut longhouse of the olden days. The Longhouse serves an eclectic fusion of Eastern and Western cuisines. Love local dishes? You can’t go wrong with a classic plate of Malaysian fried rice with satay.

Feeling peckish? Satisfy your cravings with a crispy bowl of golden brown fried calamari. For desserts, do try out the mango sticky rice or a bowl of bubur cha cha topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! •• Bungaraya Island Resort Malohom Bay, Gaya Island, tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Open daily: 6am-10pm (Sun-thurs) 6am-11pm (Fri-sat) Tel: 6088-380390
