MORTAL KOMBAT (1995)

-

Starring Christopher Lambert, Robin Shou and Cary-hiroyuki Tagawa Directed by Paul Anderson

Make no mistake: this is a terrible film. Based on one of the pioneers of the button-smashing games, Mortal Kombat was released in the 90’s and took the crown for the campiest of all video game films (to be fair, it was a tough battle). The plot seems to be missing in action, but that’s okay: fan service was given by shoving as many beloved Mortal Kombat characters into it as possible (there was a chill when I first saw Scorpion and Sub-zero on screen), and saying catch phrases like “Flawless victory!” Directed by Paul Anderson, who vastly improved his video game adaptation skills with Resident Evil, this film is a perfect example of the so-badit’s-good trope. Leave your brain at the door, stay in and enjoy the campiness.
