Before Sunrise (1995)
Directed by Jean-marc Vallée
WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) meet on a train and decide to spend time together in Vienna before heading back to their respective countries the next morning. Meaningful conversation, meandering strolls, stolen looks, and the kindling of romantic love ensues.
WHY WE RECOMMEND IT: This Richard Linklater classic is a film where the city itself feels like one of the main characters. A timeless city filled with architectural landmarks, Vienna offers the perfect backdrop for two people roaming its stoney streets and falling in love that will surely have you giggling into your fist like a schoolgirl (or maybe that’s just me). Some might find the premise of this film a bit too unbelievable, but as someone who has fallen in love while exploring the city of Vienna, I can attest to its possibility!
FUN FACT: Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy subsequently became co-writers for the movie’s two sequels: ‘Before Sunset’ and ‘Before Midnight’.
