Vicky Christina Barcelona (2008)
Directed by Woody Allen
WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Christina (Scarlett Johansson) are two Americans spending the summer in Barcelona. They meet enigmatic artist Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) who is having problems with his ex-wife Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz). Complicated relationships ensue.
WHY WE RECOMMEND IT: This is a beautiful film filled with beautiful people, but what stands out above all else is the rich Catalan art and architecture that plays such a central part in th character’s journeys to discovering themselves. You’ll get to see Antoni Gaudi’s famous works such as Basilica De La Segrada Familia, La Pedrera, and Park Güell, but also the Asturias cities of Oviedo and Avilés located in the North of Spain, which boasts a dreamy coastline, ornate cultural sites, and a Spanish Alpine backdrop.
FUN FACT: Woody Allen wrote the role of Juan Antonio with Javier Bardem in mind.
