The Greek as­tronomer Eratos­thenes be­comes the first per­son to dis­cover the circumference of the Earth. He uses the an­gles of shad­ows and the dis­tance be­tween Alexan­dria and Syene to ar­rive at a value of 40,000 km. The ac­tual circumference of the Earth is 40,032 km.
