IF YOU’RE A recreational diver, and reading about underwater discoveries has inspired you to want to get in on the action, there are courses you can take that will teach you so much more about the underwater world, and give you a taste of what diving for science is all about.
Becoming a professional scientific diver means taking serious occupational diving courses through an organisation such as the Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme, or the American Academy of Underwater Sciences. The Australian Skills Quality Authority also recognises a course entitled “Perform Diving for Scientific Purposes”, as a national qualification.
But, if you’re not quite ready to embark on a professional level qualification, you can still get a taste of what it means to dive for science; several of the big certification agencies offer courses that will give you a great foundation for taking your diving into the world of science and discovery. These courses will give you more insight into the underwater environment, which is an essential place to start if you want to discover new things about it.
