Artwork of the Year
“Before the camera was invented, art played a crucial role in science. It was through a series of drawings of different finches on the Galápagos Islands that Charles Darwin proposed the theory of evolution. In Southeast Asia, William Farquhar commissioned local painters to illustrate the local plants and animals. Even today, art still has the power to inspire and educate; more than an expression of personal emotion or a tool for science, it can bring rare moments in the wild to our homes and living spaces. As a self-taught wildlife artist, I am blessed to be able to use this creative tool to save our planet.”
