When We Throw Plastics “Away”...
At best, the disposal process will go something like this:
The plastics will be collected with other waste by a waste management company The waste is sent to incineration plants to be burnt Heat from burning the waste is used to generate electricity in countries with the necessary facilities Toxic substances are removed before the gas from burning is released into the air
In Singapore, ferrous material is reclaimed for recycling and the ash is sent to Pulau Semakau for burial. In other countries, rubbish may be sent to landfills without burning, in which case they may end up in the oceans.
