What Bubbled
Serving as an extension to the organisation’s first ocean cleanup initiative, the Ocean Cleanup Interceptor – the first scalable solution to prevent plastic from entering the world’s oceans from rivers – on October 25, 2019. It is 100% solar-powered, extracts debris autonomously, collecting 50,000 kilograms of plastic per day, and can be placed in the majority of the world’s most polluting rivers. Research done by the organisation shows that 1,000 rivers are responsible for approximately 80 percent of the pollution and with that, it aims to rid the ocean of plastic by 2025. Currently, two interceptors have been deployed to Cengkareng Drain in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Klang River in Selangor, Malaysia, withplans to work with governments around the world to deploy the Interceptor to more rivers.
