TRADITIONAL OUTFITS

-

Before being introduced to modern wetsuits, the haenyeo wore traditional diving outfits called mulot, comprising trousers (mulsojungi), jacket (muljeoksam) and hair wrap (mulsugun)

The mulsojungi was made of cotton and was designed to minimise water resistance. It had a side opening to allow the women to change clothes without showing their bodies

The muljeoksam was a white cotton top that was worn over the mulsojungi and was common from the 1960s onwards. It was a form of jeogori, a basic upper garment in Korean traditional clothing, and protected the haenyeo from the cold and sunburns

TODAY

In the early 1970s, three-piece rubber wetsuits from Japan gradually replaced traditional cotton diving garb. Wetsuits had a huge impact, allowing the haenyeo to dive deeper and for much longer periods
