Grow­ing fears that China un­der Pres­i­dent Xi Jin­ping is set to make gains as a global cham­pion of bei­jing’s brand of au­thor­i­tar­i­an­ism are mis­placed.

With the United States un­der Pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump ap­pear­ing to re­treat from Wash­ing­ton’s tra­di­tional role as a global pro­moter of democ­racy, fears that China un­der Pres­i­dent Xi Jin­ping is set to make gains as a global cham­pion of Bei­jing’s brand of au­thor­i­tar­i­an­ism are gain­ing cur­rency in many quar­ters.

John H.S. Aberg ar­gues that those fears are grossly mis­placed.
