The Cambodian government is looking to ramp up the country’s sugar exports this year. According to a report by the country’s Ministry of Industry and Handicraft, nearly 100,000 hectares has been earmarked for sugarcane plantations with a planned capacity of 1.8m tonnes of refined sugar per year. Yet the country’s sugar industry is still only crawling towards the international market, with its five major sugar producers exporting just 80,000 tonnes – only 4% of the planned refined sugar capacity – last year.
