Lovers of contemporary art in Indonesia can take their pick this month between the Jakarta Biennale and Biennale Jogja – or even take in both. Jakarta Biennale will take place mainly at the sprawling creative space known as Gudang Sarinah Ekosistem in south Jakarta, and the event will welcome some 50 artists working in a range of mediums. However, if a smaller event in a more compact city is closer to your style, Biennale Jogja in central Java also offers a range of Indonesian visual artists, musicians, writers, speakers and community activities at the Jogja National Museum. The past three editions of the event have focused on connecting Yogyakarta with a country that, like Indonesia, also sits on the equator. This year it's the turn of Brazil.

WHERE AND WHEN? JAKARTA, 4 NOVEMBER TO 11 DECEMBER; YOGYAKARTA, 2 NOVEMBER
