The ultimate community festival is back this month in the lush Balinese town of Ubud. A highlight of the Bali calendar, the Ubud Village Jazz Festival comes together through the work of 1,000-plus volunteers bringing the best of jazz in intimate performances. In the lineup this year are a host of Indonesian acts, such as the Salamander Big Band from Bandung, which claims a mighty 30 performers in its ranks, Javanese native Ito Kurdhi and award-winning blind jazz pianist M. Ade Irawan. A special highlight is pianist Idang Rasjidi, known for his novel ability to mimic the sound of instruments like the trumpet and trombone with his voice.
