He­li­copter jail­break gang­ster re­cap­tured

A GANG­STER who made a Holly wood-es­que he­li­copter ja i lbre a k wa s a r r e s t e d i n north­ern France on Wed­nes­day af­ter three months on the run, sources close to t he case said.

A mas­sive man­hunt was launched af­ter Faid’s dar­ing July 1 es­cape, in which t wo heav ily armed ac­com­plices used smoke bombs and an­gle g r i nders to brea k t hroug h doors and whisk him to a wait­ing he­li­copter.

A rou nd 10 0 pol ic e were de­ployed to t rack dow n t he 46-yea r-old, who has cited movie bad­dies such as Tony Mon­tana in “Scar­face” as an in­spi­rat ion a nd sa id he dis­cov­ered his “ca l l i ng” at t he age of 12.

Out­go­ing In­te­rior Min­is­ter Ger­ard Col­lomb praised the loca l po­lice force in a t weet for their “com­mit­ment, braver y and de­ter­mi­na­tion”.

‘Botched heist’

Fa id had been ser v i ng a 25-year term over a botched 2010 heist in which a po­lice­woman was killed, though he cla i ms her deat h was ac­ci­denta l.

The spec­tac­u­lar jail­break saw two men pos­ing as flightschool stu­dents, who had al­ready taken an in­tro­duc­tory f l i ght, force a he­li­copter in­struc­tor at gun­point to fly them to the jail.

The ter­ri­fied pilot landed in the court­yard – the only part of the prison not fit­ted with anti-he­li­copter nets.

The war­dens, who were un­armed, fled and raised the alarm.

But within 10 min­utes Faid was gone, cheered on by his fel­low in­mates.

The he­li­copter was fou nd short ly af ter wards in a sub­urb nort heast of Paris, a long with the pilot, who had been beaten and was taken to hos­pita l in a state of shock.

Sev­eral days af­ter his es­cape in­ves­ti­ga­tors found a stash of g uns, masks a nd a ce­ment c ut ter i n t he Oi s e re g ion where Fa id g rew up, which they be­lieved be­longed to his gang.
