Royal Field Developmen­t tower begins constructi­on

THE $150 mil l ion mult i-pur pose tower, which i s a joi nt vent u re bet ween a loca l compa ny a nd a well-known US hotel chain, began constructi­on on Monday and is set to open in 2022.

The currently unnamed 45-storey tower, which includes the three-star hotel Fairf ield by Marriott Phnom Penh, is located on Russian Boulevard, next to t he 7 Makara f lyover.

It is a joint venture bet ween t he Royal Field Developmen­t Company Limited, a subsidiar y of Chip Mong Group, and the US’ Marriott Internatio­na l Inc.

Roya l Field Developmen­t cha irman Leang Khun said the partnersh ip wit h t he i nter nat iona l hotel chain is a trend happening in line with the robust grow th of the economy and tourism sector.

“The constructi­on of t he internat i on a l a nd mi x e d- c om merc i a l building and Fairf ield by Marriott Phnom Penh will make a significan­t cont r ibut ion to Cambodia’s commercia l a nd tou r ism needs,” he said.

‘Collaborat­ion will improve’

Chip Mong Group Hotels and Hospita lit y div ision senior v ice-president Simon Dell said the reason why Roya l Fields Developmen­t chose Marriott Internatio­na l as a partner was t hat it i s a n i nter nat iona l ly renowned company.

“We believe that the collaborat­ion wi l l i mprove wit hout seei ng a ny risks,” Dell said.

The f irst f ive storeys of t he tower will host offices and cinemas, while f loors 15 to 45 will ser ve as t he hotel Fairfield by Marriott Phnom Penh.

Karl Hudson, Area Vice President for Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar for Marriott Internatio­nal Inc, said Fairf ield by Marriott Phnom Penh will focus on middleclas­s clients.

“The hotel will help f ill t he gap in mid-price accommodat­ion in Cambodia,” he said.

Marriott is an internatio­nal standard hotel that was establishe­d nearly 90 years ago and has been operati ng a host of hotel s i n over 110 countries worldwide.

Cambodia Associat ion of Travel Agents president Chhay Sivlin said t he increasing number of tourists and arriva ls at internatio­na l hotels indicates conf idence in t he Kingdom and its prosperit y.

“It is a lso a message to i nter nationa l investors about t he opportunit y to come and invest. As a player in t he tourism sector, I rea lly want more of such i nvest ments f rom i nt e r n a t i on a l c ompa n i e s ,” s he said.

However, Sivl i n sa id t hat a long with the growing presence of such internatio­na l companies, Cambod i a s hou ld a l s o s t r eng t hen i t s human resource developmen­t to of better qualit y.
