Man’s headless body found on Phnom Penh train tracks
A MAN’S decapitated body was found in Phnom Penh’s Kambol district on Monday after being run over by a train.
Police believe he had fallen asleep on the tracks of the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville line.
Kambol district police chief Ha ng Mon ny on Monday identified the man as Ly Leap, a 37-yea r-old ca r mechanic f rom t he dist r ict ’s Ka ntork commune.
Monny told The Post that witnesses said Leap had been eating and drinking with friends on Sunday night until around 11:30pm.
He was later seen sitting on the railway tracks talking on his phone. His headless body was found the next morning in the same spot.
“Witnesses and the nature of the bloodstains on the tracks have convinced police that the victim was drunk and fell asleep on the railway line, with a train then running him over,” Monny said.
Separately, two Chinese tourists were killed and another 11 injured, some seriously, after the minivan they were travelling in overturned on the Kulen Mountain new road.
The road in Siem Reap prov i nc e’s Phnom Kul e n National Park is currently under construction.
Chim Sovann, Siem Reap town traffic police chief, told The Post on Monday that two women aged 59 and 17 died in the accident.
“The bodies of the deceased a re bei ng kept at t he Roya l Angkor Internationa l Hospita l in Siem Reap town awaiting Chinese consul of f icia ls a r r a ng i ng t hei r ret u r n to China.
“Another 11 Chinese were injured, some seriously, and are being treated at the same hospital,” Sovann said.
The Cambodian driver and tour guide fled the scene. Police are preparing a case to be sent to the provincial court.
The Svay Leu district police report obtained by The Post on Monday says the minivan overturned at around 2pm on Sunday as the Chinese tourists were returning from Kulen Mountain.
“The road has many turns and is steep, and the vehicle overturned because the driver was not taking enough care,” the police report states.
Hour Hong Meng, deputy head of the Svay Leu district traffic bureau, said this was the second serious accident involving vehicles overturning on the road in 10 days.
He said earlier, 11 Cambodians were injured, some seriously, when the minivan they were travelling in overturned on the way down from Kulen Mountain.
